Austin wanted a ’scary dinosaur’ for his birthday cake.  While trying to make it as scary as possible, we started getting attached to it.  Carson started saying the Scary Dinosaur was actually a “Mudder” (mother) protecting her eggs.  I hope Austin enjoys his cake as much as we enjoyed making it!

If I ever agree to make someone a Habs cake, they must consider themselves a very close friend.  My friends Dana & Kyle (see their wedding cake here http://cakeitfromme.wordpress.com/2009/08/08/164/) called to make a special request for Kyle’s dad’s birthday.  Unfortunately, the entire family are huge and hopeless Hamilton Tiger Cats and Montreal Canadiens fans.  Sean and I schemed all morning about how fun it would be if they cut into a Toronto Maple Leafs blue and white colored cake.  We settled on placing the puck in the Canadiens net.  Love you Dana & Kyle, wouldn’t do it for anyone else!

For this father and son’s Halloween weekend birthday party we tried to incorporate all of the classic Halloween elements.  Putting this edible goulish scene together was a great way to spend the morning after Halloween.

For my Bella Linda…

If you are not a Twilight fan…this post is not for you…please do not feel obligated to continue reading.   However, if you are among the esoteric group of eloquent, intelligent, beautiful humans who are wonderfully dark, romantic, passionate and are the finest critics of literary genius…you should join my posse!  So far, it’s me and my sisters Lisa & Linda.  Since Linda was turning the big 3-0… Lisa and I were just beside ourselves excited about turning her surprise B-Day bash into a Twilight/Vampire themed party!  It turned out great!  Lisa dressed as the alluring and vengeful Victoria (with blood red eyes!)  and I dressed as Rosalie in my full ‘lightning storm baseball’ outfit!

While planning the party, the topic of “the cake” came up often.  I was SO undecided about which cake to make.  In New Moon, the only description of Bella’s cake was only that it was pink.  I thought that most people at the party wouldn’t understand this insinuation.   The cake in the movie was a stunning three-tiered white and green striped cake with a crystal cake topper.  This was clearly not an option.  So, I decided to make a cake resembling the books in red, white & black with an apple, red ribbon, a parrot tulip and the chess pieces.  Then, last minute, while on the phone with Linda, out of nowhere she says, “So, did you make me a pink cake?”  I took it as a sign and came up with this cake.  One that was pink and reacted to sunlight with a dazzling luminosity.   The roses Alice had used to decorate the Cullen’s house with for Bella’s party and the Queen chess piece was symbolic of Bella’s role in Breaking Dawn as the critical player in the end of the book.

I hope that I was able to capture the essence of Bella and my forever young and beautiful sister!

I love when I’m asked to make a cake for someone who really wants to add something special to a loved one’s celebration.  I also love the challenge of making something I’ve never made before.  While planning this cake with Susanne,  I recall emailing something like, “I’ve never made a helmet before, but I’m sure it won’t be a problem.”  So I knew that this cake had to do justice to the pics she sent of the actual helmet, but also be sturdy enough to survive a drive across Toronto.  As the cake started coming together and I started adding the details, I got more and more excited about how it was turning out!  Susanne arrived to pick it up and brought the real helmet with her.  We snapped this side by side pic.  In the end, Susanne was really pleased with the results…and to me, that’s a homerun!

(FYI – I didn’t know this but, a “Champagne” Birthday is when you turn the same age as the day you were born.  It’s supposed to be a lucky year!  So, I wish the best of luck to Finn & Susanne and thanks for having faith in me!)

“Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.” – George Eliot

For Cheryl and Joe’s beautiful fall wedding, I was so happy they asked me to make their autumn inspired cake! I LOVE weddings. Sean is always wondering why I watch episode after episode of “Say Yes to the Dress” and “Rich Bride, Poor Bride” I find that no matter how many different wedding shows you watch, the most beautiful and perfect ones are those where it’s evident that most of the planning has gone into the life after the wedding is over. I have the pleasure of working alongside Cheryl and know what an intelligent, caring and loving person she is. I know her union with Joe is one that will last the successive autumns for the rest of their lives.

Besides being one of the creepier movies I’ve seen, Tim Burton’s ”The Nightmare Before Christmas” was wonderfully creative and a fantastic inspiration for this 1st Birthday cake!  Eoin’s Mommy and Daddy are big fans of the movie and thought it perfect for a fall/Halloween time party.  Daddy is especially fond of “Sally” who is the first actual fondant figurine character I’ve made.  Sean and I spent many hours designing and creating this one – trying to capture the mood of the movie.  It was a lot of fun!

There is nothing worth celebrating more than a brand new life…This baby shower cake is for one eagerly awaited little baby girl who is currently being called ”Cucumber” by an affectionate bigger brother.  Chances are the name won’t stick, but still SO sweet and a great way to include big brother.

I made this cake awhile ago for my hubby’s 30th birthday and I have posted it here before…however my husband asked if I would put it back up in honor of Arthur Guinness’ 250th birthday as of yesterday September 24th.  Cheers to Arthur Guinness!
