Happy 30th Birthday Mike!

“Life has got to be lived – that’s all there is to it.”

-        Eleanor Roosevelt

Reflection is inevitable.  We attended a friend’s 30th birthday get together last night.  We made this cake as Mike has a love for Rolling Rock like no other.  It is always enjoyable meeting new people and striking up conversations.  Unfortunately part of the way through the party an unanticipated accident occured resulting in Mike at the emergency room.  Although this blog is about cakes and the great time we have making them and satisfying clients – this post, if you’ll allow, is about a little bit more than that.

An accident resulting in some fairly serious injuries always forces us to reflect – reflection is inevitable.  Without getting into detail, the accident could’ve happened to anyone sitting around the table.  It was amazing to see how some people react in emergencies, with focus and clear intentions.  Mike’s fiancee – Katie – stayed calm and reassured Mike that everything was fine.  My wife Lori who is a nurse sprung into action and it was awesome to see her in that element and handle the situation – bravo to them.

It’s funny, my two year old was playing his ‘accidents happen’ Elmo dvd focused on going ‘potty’ the other day and that song plays in my head this morning – obviously with some grander implications.  It is a cliche that life shouldn’t be taken for granted and when frailty is exposed due to circumstances it reiterates said cliche.  It’s actually Mike’s birthday today – and he’s more than likely doing some reflecting of his own and probably enjoying some pain medication.

I realize this is a blog dedicated to our cakes and not necessarily a platform for perspective speeches, and I’m really not sure how many people read this anyway, but thanks for reading.  Here’s to wishing Mike a speedy recovery!

Sugar cookies…what Fun (Fair)!

Instead of making cupcakes for my son’s school Fun Fair this year, I made these decorated sugar cookies.  His SK class right now is in the process of incubating Painted Lady butterflies from caterpillars so they were his idea!

“Boy, those French. They have a different word for everything.” – Steve Martin

It is the day before Mother’s Day, and I’m sure Vicki’s kids know how lucky they are to have her as a Mother!  On Monday, Vicki and her teenage Son and Daughter are boarding a plane for a two week vacation to Paris and London!  After years of wishing and months of saving and planning, Vicki surprised her kids with the news that she wanted to take them on a special trip and ordered this cake for their going away party!

What an example of a great Mother – Someone who works hard (as an NICU nurse), sacrificing all that she possibly can to give her children every opportunity in life!  I hope they have an incredible trip!

I usually do some “research” when making a theme cake to study the characters and key design elements.  Through the eyes of an adult…this is a weird show!  Lot’s of strange looking characters with funny names, unidentifiable objects, poor infection control (only those of you who’ve watched enough will get this one), and no real plot line.  But the more I think about it, this is exactly the life of a toddler!  And this is when I have one of those “ah-ha” moments…life doesn’t make sense!  We meet all kinds of people who are different than us that we will bump into and try to make sense of what they’re saying.  Sometimes our days are sun-filled and flowery and sometimes we are out drifting on an open sea in the dark.  If we can just learn to enjoy the time we have together, find comfort cuddled up with a blankie, and realize that eventually we all drift back to the shore, maybe we can gain back the innocence of our youth!

This is why this was a special cake for Talan’s 1st birthday.  In the Night Garden is his favourite show…and Iggle Piggle is his best bud.  Great  Auntie Noreen, aside from being a fantastic nurse and an amazing person, knows what it means to enjoy every moment and spend them with her family and those she loves the most!  AND she knows how to go completely over the top to make everyday special!

Here are a few pics of my big boy’s “Super” 6th Birthday cupcakes!

Carson’s theme for his 6th Birthday way Super Mario Brothers.   Because we had two separate parties for him (one for school friends and another for family) I decided to make cupcakes this year.  I think these were my favourite cupcake toppers I’ve made to date!

I had a really tough time finding Super Mario party decorations…so I saw this idea and made my own banner using images I had printed @ Staples.  I also ordered custom labels from a seller on Ebay and tied them to the loot bags.

I think I had almost as much fun planning all the details of this party as Carson did having it!  All of the work was SO worth it when I saw how excited he was!  Happy Birthday to my beautiful boy!

Henri…Loved and Blessed (Part II)

But you have to know how!

Ah, little Henri’s first birthday party…I’ve never seen anything like it!  “Party Mama” Denise, a friend of mine and fellow NICU nurse, went all out to celebrate her baby turning one year old!  The cake was designed after his custom made party invitations!  With jumping castles, cotton candy and popcorn makers, orange chocolate fountain, balloon animals, magician (who was as good as David Blaine himself), pinata, and loot bags worthy of the Oscars…nothing was forgotten!  But with all that going on, what you couldn’t help but notice was how much this family loves this little boy!  Grandparents, aunts, uncles, all took turns with smiling faces and arms outstretched wanting to hold Henri.  It was a special day…a memorable one!   I was happy to be there!
