“Life has got to be lived – that’s all there is to it.”
- Eleanor Roosevelt
Reflection is inevitable. We attended a friend’s 30th birthday get together last night. We made this cake as Mike has a love for Rolling Rock like no other. It is always enjoyable meeting new people and striking up conversations. Unfortunately part of the way through the party an unanticipated accident occured resulting in Mike at the emergency room. Although this blog is about cakes and the great time we have making them and satisfying clients – this post, if you’ll allow, is about a little bit more than that.
An accident resulting in some fairly serious injuries always forces us to reflect – reflection is inevitable. Without getting into detail, the accident could’ve happened to anyone sitting around the table. It was amazing to see how some people react in emergencies, with focus and clear intentions. Mike’s fiancee – Katie – stayed calm and reassured Mike that everything was fine. My wife Lori who is a nurse sprung into action and it was awesome to see her in that element and handle the situation – bravo to them.
It’s funny, my two year old was playing his ‘accidents happen’ Elmo dvd focused on going ‘potty’ the other day and that song plays in my head this morning – obviously with some grander implications. It is a cliche that life shouldn’t be taken for granted and when frailty is exposed due to circumstances it reiterates said cliche. It’s actually Mike’s birthday today – and he’s more than likely doing some reflecting of his own and probably enjoying some pain medication.
I realize this is a blog dedicated to our cakes and not necessarily a platform for perspective speeches, and I’m really not sure how many people read this anyway, but thanks for reading. Here’s to wishing Mike a speedy recovery!
